Impression: Seymour Chwast

The designer I got for this brief is an American graphic designer called Seymour Chwast. It was the first time I have heard of this designer, so I’ve looked it the designer and his work. As I was at the design museum, I went to their library and looked at their books and find any that talked about the designer. I managed to two books that had some of his work.

Seymour Chwast is an American graphic designer who has wide range of work that has influence on the visual culture. Studied Illustration and design at the Cooper Union, a school known for the arts and science.

Seymour Chwast has worked since the 1950s. His typography started when he discovered Victorian type in school and he saw in a book called Phillip collection, where type was decorative and there wasn’t no photo grieving, so the material they used in that time was different. He also looked into magazines where Victorian type went into many different art styles that has helped shape his style of typography. In the rise of the Helvetica type font, Seymour has tried to avoid using this typeface for his work but has work with swiss design mainly in the books he creates.
