In Thursday session, We got the learn how to use InDesign. The group was given a brief on a Monday to create collage. The collage was based on Clenched Fists and we had to think about what it meant to us. Working on ourself, we had to create a mix media montage based on the clenched fists by choosing a subject/cause that we are interested in.
My montage was based around beauty. I printed out a outline of a fist and collected magazine texts and images and stuck them.
On InDesign, I went to file and created a new document. On the new document, it gives a setting box. I changed some of the setting based on what I’m going to make which is a two page spread. To get the two page spread, I change the input on the number of pages from 1 to 2 and the start page from being 1 to 2 so that I’m getting the two page spread being the middle section of a book. Intent is set on print because I’m working towards printing it out then putting it on the web or anyway else.
Gutter is when you have to columns and theres a gap running the middle of the two columns.
After I’ve change the setting, I just press ok.
When I’m creating my two page spread, I would like to view my page overall, the left bottom is called normal which means all of my ruler guides and colour lines that comes with editing will appear and the one on the right is preview which lets me see the page.
This is just indicating pages or showing what pages your currently working on.
On this pages, I need the text. I just text and place a few text boxes. One of boxes, I typed down Header which later changed into becoming my title. In another text box, I go to type in the drop menubar and click on Fill with placeholder which fills the text box with preset text, this will act as subtext that will be place underneath the title. I create two more boxes and fill them with placeholder which act as paragraph.
On the top right hand corner of InDesign, There is a dropdown menu that said essential, I clicked on that and selected Typography. By doing this it gave me a different menubar on the right. I clicked on Character Style and I created a new character style and typed down, Header, Desk, Paragraph leaf and Paragraph for each text boxes I made.
I went to layout and clicked on margins and columns. I changed the numbers to get a grid on the pages. On the margins, I changed the top and bottom from 12.7mm to 15mm and 14 mm and inside and the outside, I changed from 12.7mm to 30mm and 18 mm. The columns, I changed the number from 1 to 4.
This is what the outcome of the page looks like.
On the right-side of the page I upload the image of what my collage. Instead of uploading the image on a page , InDesign changed my arrowhead with an image that I created. What I done was I highlight the part of a page I want my image to be placed.
This is what the outcome looks like. I have changed the text with all the information I want on my page. The image on the right is what it looks like with grid and the left is what it looks like on preview.
Overall, I think the experience of using InDesign was hard because I’ve only used this application once 3 years ago but I will used this because I do have an interest in magazines and I would like to go on to work in this sector, so learning and experimenting on InDesign would help improve my understanding. I found this session helpful because it gave me some basic understanding and after this session, I will go on tutorials online to find more ways on using this application.
